Images are a huge part of presentation design, so it’s good to master the editing tools that allow us to tweak them, play with them, and make slides more engaging. Because you still want to communicate your ideas in the best way possible, right?
So, for last year’s Present to Succeed conference, we teamed up with PowerPoint MVP, Julie Terberg, who shared her top tips for image manipulation in the Microsoft-native presentation tool. Julie has decades of experience in presentation design, she served as a director of the Presentation Guild for six years and is the author of Building PowerPoint Templates.
Julie’s talk at the Present to Succeed conference was centered around some hands-on tips on image manipulation in PowerPoint. Here’s a few of them.
Creating contrast
Building contrast is one of the most powerful ways to attract and retain your audience’s attention. Hold on to this thought when you start working on your slides. One of the easiest methods for creating contrast within a picture is to insert a rectangular shape that covers the image, fill it with colour and then adjust the colour transparency from the Format Background tool. By darkening the upper layer of the photo, you increase the legibility of a text box that sits on top of the newly created colour filter, for instance.
Watch Julie demonstrate how to use shapes to enhance the sense of depth and contrast within a picture in a PowerPoint presentation.

Removing the background
Cutting out the background of a picture is again a speedy way to create a slide with a background of your choice. Once done, you can edit the cutout as any other image. You only need to remove the background of the original portrait, duplicate it and apply different effects to the duplicates.
Here we’ve written in detail how you can make it yourself.

Creating texture
In the session recording Julie Terberg shares another artistic technique that adds to the sense of dimension and texture on your slide, overlayering. You can achieve that by combining two images together.

Adjust the transparency of the top picture and put it on top of the other one. Et voilà!
Don’t miss out on the complete session recording, as this is a very hands-on class with a lot of tips on creative image manipulation for PowerPoint users, like how to make a text box appear from behind a specific part of a picture or how to turn typography into shapes. Did that spark your curiosity? Imagine how cooler it will get in April, when the third edition of the Present to Succeed conference is taking place. Grab your ticket here.
