Because novelty wins

At the end of 2018, we got a call from the founder of 500LABS. He was invited to pitch his project as part of an international startup competition led by SAP and Lufthansa. The award – a huge amount of money and support for the execution of the project provided by Lufthansa themselves. Unfortunately, Alex's presentation wasn't on the level to win the investment. Not even close. So, we had to get involved.

Process

As the stakes were high and this otherwise short, 5-minute presentation, could have changed the company forever, we started from scratch. We had to revise the whole story and from there the design too. Once we completed the work there, we planned to spend a day of rehearsals to make sure that everything fits perfectly.

Step 1

Storytelling

When our work on story began, we invested quite some time in understand exactly who our audience is and who would decide the winner of the competition. We found out the members of the jury and researched them heavily. At one point during our research we found an interview article with one of the major decision makers from the jury - the CDO(Chief Digital Officer) of Lufthansa. In there, there was a quote by him claiming that he is on the hunt for a product like the one 500labs was building. We're sorry but there was no way we are not going to use that quote "against him". And that, made the whole difference. Yes, it's a risky approach but hey, these are startups and that's a competition between startups. If you are not willing to risk, why are you even there?

Step 2

Design

The initial draft of his presentation was too technical and looked more like a document than a presentation. You know what we mean. Heavy on text. There was no way we were going to let Alex present with such slides, so we extracted the key messages from the story and let our design team do the magic.

Step 3

Animation

The Morph transition in PowerPoint was heavily utilised for this project. This way we created a presentation that the jury didn't even imagine was possible. That by itself allowed Alex and 500labs to differentiate even further from the competition who presented their products in a very standard and, shall we say expected, way.

Step 4

After multiple sync meetings, the whole presentation was finalized, animated, tested for consistency and compressed with a specialized software, so that it’s a small and light as possible. Something that's of a huge importance when the delivery format is online.

500labs won the big award in their category. Reference in the section below.
